 The project proposal is attached below in English and Portuguese, as well as the budget, and the program of activities.

OBJECTIVES, ACTIVITIES, AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

Description of the project, the objectives, and the activities:

Camp Crioula is a camp that will last one week for young women in the eighth grade in Domingos Ramos, Amor de Deus, and São Domingos High Schools and São Francisco School. The camp will take place at the Primary School in Achada Baleia in the Municipality of São Domingos.
The goal of the camp is to organize and provide a sustainable camp to empower 36 Cape Verdean girls in the 8th grade. This camp will offer these young women information in the area of leadership, decision making, future options, health issues, and self discovery. Overall, the camp will provide a safe atmosphere in which 36 young women can fully explore their personality, their options for the future, and to determine their own goals and objectives for life.

Objectives:

1)      Provide a safe, fun, and bonding atmosphere in the form of a camp in order to promote self-discovery and future planning;
2)      Obtain materials and recruit Cape Verdean female presenters to speak on the following topics:
a)      personality and self-exploration;
b)      communication and decision-making skills;
c)      women’s health issues;
d)      women and relationships in Cape Verde;
e)      leadership;
f)        teamwork;
g)      future goals;
3)      Create a bond between the young female participants and counselors, speakers, and other representatives;
4)      Conduct trainings and information sessions comprised of positive women in Cape Verde to develop girls self worth and self confidence;
5)      To promote a cultural exchange and dialog between girls from different zones;
6)      Ensure camp sustainability by:
a)      Involving Cape Verdeans in the planning process, obtaining sponsors, and collaborating with NGOs and other organizations;
b)      Working with the chosen camp leaders during camp and throughout the year to organize other girls clubs.

Activities:

The purpose of this camp is to empower young women, to develop their self- esteem, confidence, and leadership, and to set goals for the future.
  • An organizing committee was formed to plan the camp. The committee consisted of Peace Corps Volunteers, students from the Instituto Superior de Educação, and women from Riberon Chiquero. The committee members gave their thoughts and ideas about the conditions of young women in Cape Verde. Also, they contributed ideas about things and issues about which young women need more information and training.
  • The recruitment of campers will take place in April and May 2008. The young women in the eighth grade in Domingos Ramos, Amor de Deus, and São Domingos High Schools and São Francisco School will complete an application for participation. The campers should demonstrate characteristics of leadership, enthusiasm, and concern for issues that affect young women in Cape Verde.
  • Camp Crioula is a sustainable project because Cape Verdean women are members of the organizing committee and counselors during the camp. Their involvement capacitates these Cape Verdeans to organize, execute, and facilitate Camp Crioula in the future.   Also, the campers will know how to create groups of young women in their schools. These groups will be a way to share information with other students in the schools about life skills and other things of the camp.
  • The camp program is attached – Appendix B.
