Agro-Hortelão Association

Description

Agro-Hortelao was created in 1995 by twenty-five citizens, almost entirely from Hortelao.  The goal of the Association was to improve the life for the community of Hortelao.  The Association is run jointly by the President and the Director of the Board.  Each member is active by attending meetings and casting votes.  Every action of the Association is chosen exclusively by vote.

Activities

Since it's creation Agro-Hortelao has built a community center which consists of two classrooms, two kitchens, one office and a bathroom.  One classroom is used for the kindergarten, the other for formacaos.  One kitchen is used for preparation of the kindergarten students lunch and the other big and beautiful (we just completed it) kitchen is used for the doce project, one of the income generation projects of Agro-Hortelao. 

In addition to the doce project, Agro-Hortelao has a group of 14 women from Calhetta, Achada Tenda, Hortelao, Principal, Gongon and Serra Malaguetta whom received a three month formacao on Panu de Terra.  This formacao taught participants to: make and maintain the looms, make the panu, purchase all necessary material and finally to sell, record and market their product.  Due to the sucess of this formacao we are now looking for funding for a second formacao to teach eight more community members to make panu de terra.  Two of the women from the first formacao will be the formadors.

Agro-Hortelao organizes many formacoes for the community.  This year we have had formacoes on: the environment and waste management, sexual relationships, and healthy habits for adults.
